Who We Are
People like doing business with people they know, like and trust.
Canoe Media Services was founded by journalists who love local businesses and entrepreneurs. We work hard to help companies boost the reach of their brand, likability and trustworthiness among customers (and potential customers).
Our passion is to work with you to find creative ways to promote your business by showcasing your expertise, winning over new customers and making your current customers more loyal.
Our approach is completely customizable. Our strategy starts with understanding your goals, needs and business, and we build from there. We promise we won't ever shoehorn your business into a pre-set package of services that doesn't meet your needs. Come collaborate with us!

Meet the Team
Beth is founder of Canoe Media Services and the company's primary success strategist. After years working as a journalist and watching the media landscape change, she started seeing the need for small businesses to improve at telling their own stories. She has worked for several online-only news publications and small businesses in editorial, marketing and business development roles, including the Lawrence Journal-World and KUSports.com, MKE in Milwaukee, The V.I. Source in the U.S. Virgin Islands and AOL's Patch.com. She also worked at the Newspaper Association of America, where she ran the Digital Edge Awards and blog, the Online Publishing Update and more. She graduated from Washington University (St. Louis) and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism with a digital media storytelling focus, and would go back to either in a heartbeat. Beth is originally from Connecticut, but has called Northern Virginia home since 2006. She lives in Alexandria in a home that's often too loud (thanks to two small children, a dog and a cat), loves warm weather and the ocean, trying new restaurants, reading and consuming caffeine.
Jennifer Van der Kleut
Jennifer is originally from the Silicon Valley/San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. She graduated from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at San Jose State University. Jennifer worked for several Silicon Valley-area news publications such as the Silicon Valley Community Newsgroup and the Los Gatos Daily News, as a writer and reporter, and served as a contributing editor for the high-end glossy lifestyle magazine, South Bay Accent. She joined AOL's Patch.com in 2012 in California, and transferred to Northern Virginia where she built Fairfax City and Herndon Patch into some of the region's most popular sites. She has also worked for ABC7 News/WJLA-TV as a web producer and social media coordinator.
William 'Guv' Callahan
Guv Callahan is a writer and digital content specialist living in Austin, TX. Guv spent the last six years of his career working as a journalist in the Washington, D.C. area before moving to Texas to pursue marketing and social media, tacos and warmer climates. Prior to working for Canoe Media Services, Guv wrote and edited for Patch.com and Comprint Military Publications, covering everything from high school sports and local business to the Department of Defense. He graduated from the University of Richmond in Richmond, VA, and probably likes coffee too much.
